According to data released by the Commission for University Education (CUE) through the University Education Management Information System (UEMIS), the following are the top five universities in Kenya with the highest number of students enrolled in degree programs as of November 2024.

These figures reflect the strength, capacity, and appeal of the institutions among learners seeking higher education opportunities across Kenya.

1. University of Nairobi (Uon) — 41,174 students

Uon leads with the highest number of students enrolled in degree programs, highlighting its position as Kenya’s premier and oldest university. The institution continues to attract students across a wide range of academic disciplines, including Medicine, Engineering, Law, and the Arts.

2. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) — 41,131 students

A close second, JKUAT is widely respected for its strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The university’s emphasis on innovation and research has seen it grow rapidly in student numbers.

3. Kenyatta University (KU) — 36,013 students
Kenyatta University maintains its status as one of the largest and most diverse universities in Kenya. With a strong foundation in education, health sciences, and social sciences, KU remains a top choice for thousands of students annually.

4. Mount Kenya University (MKU) — 30,448 students
As one of the leading private universities, MKU has made tremendous strides in increasing access to higher education. Its flexible learning modes and regional campuses have significantly contributed to its large student base.

5. Maseno University — 27,067 students
Maseno University rounds out the top five with a growing population of degree students. Its integration of eLearning and digital platforms like the Maseno eCampus has contributed to increased enrollment and academic flexibility.
